Blue Beam! is now in beta stage of development

Refined a few things in the game:

  • More sprites now have the crisp outline to look more like the old vector arcade games.
  • Enemy speeds and movement patterns have been refined. Mindlessly spraying shots in an endless circle is no longer a "strategy"!
  • Enemy spawning is now weighted. Those annoying indestructible cubes now spawn less frequently.
  • The cannon now has a higher rate of fire.
  • Added a new +10 bonus point item.
  • Temporarily changed the name of the game from Space Swarm! to Blue Beam! I explain why below.

I also made some shocking (gasp) discoveries while doing research on itch:

  • There is already a game on itch.io with the same core mechanic. It's titled Defend and shares a few core features with Blue Beam!, notably the orbiting cannon and shield concept and the black and white outline motif. That's where the similarities end, however.  Blue Beam! has two button controls, the orbital shield is destructible and shoots a beam that wipes the screen clear, and you can stock up on shields. I think Blue Beam! differs enough for development to continue.
  • There are quite a lot of games that are titled Space Swarm! The game is tentatively retitled to Blue Beam! after the conspiracy theory because the game has similar elements to the conspiracy theory's claims (asteroids and aliens threatening the Earth). This title is not final, however. It'll probably be based on keyword research but will include "Space" in there as a nod to the arcade games it's inspired by.
